She’s smart and remarkably cool-headed considering the situation, but those qualities are overshadowed by the decision to make her a serial killer. Of all the new characters, I’m the most disappointed by Mira because she had such potential. He does all of these badly and they are all a drag to watch. He consistently does three things: yell at a defenseless child, flirt with Mira and threaten people with a shotgun. You do you, I guess.Įric is the most unbearable character in the game. Also she thought a magical transporter pod seemed like a good place to have sex. She is also is too tightly bound to Sigma’s story to be interesting in her own right. She exists only to make parts of this game and its predecessor make sense. ![]() I’m sad to report that Diana is a nothing character for me. She looks like an anime version of Sansa Stark in contemporary (and adorable) clothing. When Diana first showed up I assumed I’d love her. Paired with major characters Akane and Junpei, Carlos feels like a third wheel despite being the leader of his team. He’s a firefighter with a little sister who needs his help, but because we never meet his sister and she never has any relevance to the story, it’s hard to care about her or their relationship. Other than that, though, Carlos is not particularly exciting. He’s often the voice of reason in his team and tries to help them not only solve puzzles and survive life or death games but be better people to each other. Zero Time Dilemma introduces five new characters: Carlos, Diana, Eric, Mira and a mysterious child with a giant robot head. Now imagine that only his mouth moves and nothing else changes. I can’t forgive being forced to watch a character’s jaw move up and down like an elevator to reveal teeth that look like two pieces of masking tape every time someone talks. I especially can’t forgive that so much time and effort was put into the physics behind Mira’s breasts that could have been spent making these characters look and feel more like human beings. I can forgive the dialogue not matching up with the mouth animations. Zero Time Dilemma’s visuals cross the boundary of wonky and march straight into upsetting. With enough time and a good story, however, the new style grew on me. I was a little disappointed when I played Virtue’s Last Reward and discovered it was in 3-D. I found the 2-D art in 999 charming, particularly when characters got the Ace Attorney-style “we’ll animate two poses just for fun” treatment. Visuals have never been the most important or spectacular thing about the Zero Escape games, but they’ve also never been terrible. It looks really bad Even the babies look scary. Nothing about this set-up is drastically different from the other Zero Escape games. Our job is to figure out what’s really going on. The player, however, gradually unlocks all of their memories. ![]() Without their memories, the teams have little hope of figuring out Zero’s larger plan. During their forced participation in this life or death game, the characters in Zero Time Dilemma are given an amnesia drug every ninety minutes. Most are the result of team decisions to save or sacrifice other players. There are many ways that characters can (and do) die throughout the game. Sounds easy! But to get those passwords, six people have to die. In Zero Time Dilemma the players must obtain six passwords to open the facility’s only exit. ![]() Each game is run by an antagonist who goes by Zero, but Zero is not necessarily the same person each time. In Zero Time Dilemma, it’s the Decision Game. In Virtue’s Last Reward, it’s the Ambidex game. In each Zero Escape game, the characters must escape many different rooms, but their ultimate goal is to escape the game itself. Zero Time Dilemma is the third installment in Kotaro Uchikoshi’s Zero Escape series and includes all of the familiar elements of the previous games: escape rooms, multiple endings, wacky characters and enough plot threads to sew a quilt. What’s it about? One of many choices you’ll make if you play the game. Unfortunately, I can’t go to a decision tree in my head and change that. Since this review exists, I obviously decided to play the game. Time to Decide: Do I take fans at their word that Zero Time Dilemma is bad and choose to play a different game, or do I give it a chance?
